The Role
Based at our Portsmouth office, we have an exciting opportunity for an Electrical Design Engineer to take a lead role in supporting our Distribution Network Operator (DNO) frameworks and Independent Connection Provider (ICP) projects.
This hybrid position allows for a mix of office, home, and occasional site work. The successful candidate will be responsible for producing and managing electrical designs for a range of EHV, HV, and LV projects, ensuring technical excellence and compliance with industry standards.
You will report directly to the Director of Operations, working closely with project managers, engineers, and site teams to deliver high-quality design solutions on time and within scope.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of EHV/HV/LV electrical networks for DNO and ICP projects
- Prepare design drawings, schematics, and supporting calculations using AutoCAD and other software
- Ensure designs meet DNO specifications, standards, and relevant legislation
- Produce detailed design reports, protection studies, and technical documentation
- Liaise with clients, DNOs, and internal delivery teams to coordinate design requirements
- Provide design input and technical guidance during construction and commissioning phases
- Review and approve supplier and subcontractor design submissions
- Conduct site visits for surveys, design validation, and design handovers
Requirements
- Degree or HNC/HND in Electrical or Power Engineering (or equivalent)
- Proven experience in electrical design (11kV and 33kV) in the power industry
- Strong knowledge of DNO/ICP design processes, connection applications, and standards
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and electrical design tools (e.g., Amtech, ERACS, or similar)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a project team
- Full UK driving licence (preferred)
Desirable (but not essential)
- Experience with EHV design (132kV)
- Understanding of CDM Regulations and design risk management
- Familiarity with ENA standards and DNO submission processes
- Chartered or working towards professional registration (IEng/CEng)
